Targeted Divestment
What it is and How it Works

The Sudanese Government has inflicted terror and genocide on its own people.  They have the blood of up to 400,000 innocent people on their hands, and despite the outrage of the international community the Sudanese Government continues to take in a great deal of money from investors all over the world.

Some foreign investments affect Sudanese citizens positively; these are the investments that support local business, namely agriculture.  The investments that DAN wishes to target in Australia are those that directly support the Sudanese Government and do not contribute to the well-being of local citizens.  These companies are mainly those that are invested in Sudan’s oil industry.  Revenue made from external trade in the oil industry directly supports the Sudanese Government.  The Sudanese Government does not re-invest this money in infrastructure or social programs- it invests in its military and its campaign against the Darfuri people.

Many people read this and automatically think-

“This doesn’t apply to me- I’m not invested in any part of the oil industry!”

The problem with this statement however, is that investing in today’s economy means that your money is most likely tied up in at least one of the companies blacklisted by the Sudan Divestment Task Force.  They have a screening tool available if you would like to be absolutely certain your money is not contributing to the Darfur crisis.  For more information, contact us.

While you may not be invested personally your bank, your university, your mutual fund or your superannuation fund probably is.

Do you know where your money is going?
Do you know what your tuition is supporting?
Don’t you think you have a right to know?
