DAN Appeal

The crisis in Darfur has lead to the deaths of around 400,000 people and the mass displacement of more than 2.5 million Darfuri people around the world. In Australia we have a small but active Darfur community, and DAN strives to provide opportunities for this community to voice its concerns, and educate fellow Australians and our elected representatives about the situation from which they have fled. DAN also works to provide support for Darfur community members as they settle into a new country.

Over the past year DAN has, among other activities:
- Successfully lobbied for an Australian contribution to the United Nations African Union Mission in Darfur
- Organised a half page letter to Former Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews signed by 68 agencies to be published in the Australian newspaper
- Held cooking, English and computer classes for Darfuri women living in Australia

However, as a not-for-profit organisation which is run by the emerging Darfur refugee community and other volunteers DAN needs your help to continue its valuable work. We are running an appeal from 15 June – 31 July 2008 to ensure we have sufficient funding for another year.

There are a number of ways that you can donate:
• Send a cheque to Darfur Australia Network, PO Box 1249, Collingwood, VIC, 3056

• Direct debits can be made to:
Acct name: Darfur Australia Network
BSB: 633-000
Account: 128572286

• By Pay-pal:

• Visit us in person (Room 1.3, 247 Flinders Lane, Melbourne)

Unfortunately, DAN is not able to provide tax deductable receipts given the advocacy work that we do. It is therefore extremely difficult for us to raise funds to support our important work.

Any donation great or small will make a large contribution to the ongoing work of the Darfur Australia Network.

Thanking you in advance.

$10 Will ensure community members are able to attend DAN training and awareness raising events
$20 Will cover the costs of one community computer training session to ensure that the Darfur community builds computer literacy necessary for obtaining rewarding employment in Australia.
$25 Will cover the costs of one community cooking class per person. These classes are provided on a weekly basis to educate about the fresh foods available in Australia and how to achieve a balanced diet for adults and children.
$30 Will purchase a fair trade soccer ball for use in Darfur community soccer training sessions. These training sessions offer an opportunity for community members to congregate and enjoy a healthy lifestyle while gaining new skills from our talented coach.
$50 Will ensure the distribution of a complete education kit about the Darfur crisis to a school or community group, coupled with a visiting lecture from a member of DAN.
$100 Will pay for the cost of one child attending a six week community arts project. In 2008 this project is called “Tomorrow’s Eyes” and focuses on teaching children how to use cameras to capture their world through photographs. The photos will be exhibited to showcase the experiences and creative talents of young people from the Darfur community.
$200 Will provide a media training course with an expert trainer for the Darfur community. This day long course will assist in building community capacity to respond to the enquiries of journalists and articulate their opinions well.
$500 Will provide airfares and accommodation for two members of the Darfur community to travel to Canberra and meet with politicians.
