Communities in Need: Educating Our Future

The “Communities in Need: Educating our Future” project aims to address the need to promote understandings of diversity and difference between refugee communities, migrant communities and the wider Victorian community.  This project will achieve greater cultural awareness, improved cultural tolerance and increased educational knowledge, broaden individual skill bases within the Darfuri Sudanese community and provide opportunities to celebrate Australia’s cultural diversity.

Description of Major Activities

Arts Alive
The Arts Alive event will demonstrate  a commitment to a celebration and education about the Darfuri Sudanese community through the arts, whether that is visual arts, music, photography, crafts, dance or a combination.

Our Refugee Experiences: A Child’s View
Our Refugee Experiences will also focus on celebration and education through arts, but with a focus on involving youth from both the Darfuri Sudanese community and from the broader Victorian community, in rural and metro areas.

Celebration of Women
Celebration of Women will focus on celebrating the important role of women within the community as a whole, focusing on involving women from the Darfuri Sudanese community and the broader Victorian communities in which they live through a cooking program and dinners.

DVD Creation
The DVD Creation and Launch project will be run to create, shoot and produce a DVD which can be used in presentations at schools and universities to promote understanding of the Darfur Sudanese community and the context in which they have come to Australia.

Darfur Community Engagement Internships and Scholarship Support Program
Darfur Community Engagement Internships and the associated Scholarship Support program is designed to enable members of Australia’s emerging Darfur community to gain knowledge and skills, share these within the broader community, and facilitate the ongoing work of DAN.  The program will allow the interns to develop transferable skills which can be used in other workplace settings and within DAN, supporting their inclusion and engagement with others outside of the Darfuri Sudanese community.

Education Program
The Education Program includes the development of teaching materials and presentations in schools and universities for the duration of the project.
